Rescue your shoes from oblivion, you can still save them.
Shoes are a basic wardrobe item that we've used for a long time, and they often say a lot about us— "tell me what shoes you wear and I'll tell you who you are." Taking care of them is important, and to do so, we need to know a bit more about the material they're made of. Today, a wide variety of materials are used to make shoes, and this time we will talk about the care of one in particular: nubuck.
If the name doesn't ring a bell or you're not familiar with it, don't worry, that's about to change.
Nubuck is a type of cowhide leather with a velvety texture, achieved by sanding the outer part of the leather, making it stronger and more durable. It should not be confused with suede, another type of velvety leather, which is also sanded to achieve the final result. The main difference between them is that nubuck is sanded on the outer surface of the skin (the animal's outer leather), while suede is sanded on the inner layer.
Shoes made from this material tend to be expensive due to the value placed on nubuck, in addition to its water resistance and durability. A pair of nubuck shoes will always be durable and have a unique style, standing out for the personality they offer.
If you prefer not to wear animal leather due to your views, remember that, just like with leather (which we discussed in another article), there are synthetic materials that perfectly replicate nubuck. So, there’s no need to deprive yourself of wearing shoes with the personality of nubuck, whether real or synthetic leather.
The downside of velvety leather materials is that they are more vulnerable to stains and dirt. To clean them, it’s necessary to use tools and products specifically designed to care for nubuck.
In the case of shoe shampoo, the use is quite simple. Just dilute a little shampoo in water, and once mixed, scrub the surface of the shoe with a cloth. It's also recommended to use a special cloth for cleaning nubuck for better results. If dealing with more stubborn stains, you can also use a suede eraser or a sandpaper to rub the surface of the nubuck and eliminate the toughest stains.
Now, take those shoes out from under the bed, give them a good cleaning, and wear them like new!
