Most women know that wearing very high heels frequently can be quite uncomfortable, causing the feet to suffer the consequences. However, despite this discomfort, we wear them daily.
It is completely proven that
frequent use of heels with a height of more than three centimeters and a very narrow tip harms foot health. They can cause bunions, permanent bone deformity in the foot, and significant pain. These studies were conducted by researchers at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid in collaboration with the CENTRO clinic and were presented at the World Congress of Podiatry in Rome, Italy.
Dr. Rubén Sánchez Gómez, author of the study and member of the podiatry service at this prestigious Madrid clinic, explained that it was previously known that narrow, pointed shoes could cause severe bone deformities in the foot when worn frequently. However,
normal heels were also discovered to be a cause of bunions.
How was this determined?
To reach this conclusion, approximately eighty women were examined, none of whom had suffered foot deformities before the study. Some were studied wearing high heels, while others were studied without heels; none were tested with pointed shoes. The study observed that women who increased the heel height had two bones misaligned in the phalanx near the hallux and the first metatarsal. For women who participated in this study, after removing the high heels, their toes returned to normal. It has been fully demonstrated that women who wear heels over three centimeters in height frequently experience bone misalignment, which can cause long-term permanent deformities.
Women who wore heels throughout their lives
Almost sixty percent of women over fifty years old suffer from frequent and severe foot pain caused by bunions, a deformity that can severely affect proper mobility. This also leads to significant lower back problems, greatly reducing quality of life, causing insecurity, and sometimes leading to depression.
What happens in the foot?
The front part of the feet has the function of carrying up to 57% of the body weight. This percentage significantly increases with heels of four centimeters, reaching up to 75% when the heels are raised by about two more centimeters. With increased pressure on the forefoot, calluses also develop in the midfoot, which are very painful and lead to immobility. To avoid these painful deformities, it is recommended to avoid wearing shoes with narrow toes, as they do not provide enough space for the toes, causing pain and forcing the big toe to deviate.
If bone deformity in the foot has already occurred, there is no way to fix it. Treatments can only help alleviate the pain, as the deviation and loss of mobility cannot be remedied with any medical treatment. It is clear that avoiding such shoes is better. While they make us look stylish and elegant, we must be aware that they can cause significant problems that impact foot health.
