The sole of the foot is important. Have you wondered why it hurts? If walking becomes painful and the soles of your feet are the problem, take the time to find out what's causing it.
Fasciitis.
Often, the
pain in the sole of the foot can be due to complications in the plantar fascia. This is a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone (calcaneus) to the toes, creating the tension that forms the arch of the foot.
The inflammation of this tissue is called plantar fasciitis or simply fasciitis. If the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, it can cause a
sharp pain in the sole of the foot. Typically, the pain is most intense in the morning with the first steps or after exercise. Ironically, the pain is not as severe during physical activity but increases during the "cool-down" period afterward.
Causes.
The plantar fascia can be affected if
foot anatomy has issues like flat feet or high arches, leading to overexposure of the tissue to the surface in the former case and increased tension in the latter. Running or walking long distances downhill or on uneven surfaces can also lead to fasciitis due to overloading the tissue.
Weight gain also contributes to wear and tear of the plantar fascia. Similarly, excessive tension in the Achilles tendon or wearing shoes with poor arch support or overly soft soles can accelerate tissue inflammation, resulting in acute pain known as fasciitis.
Who is more prone?
Plantar fasciitis is common between 40 and 60 years of age due to wear and tear. Sports and activities that generate excessive tension on the heel, such as long-distance running, jumping, ballet, and aerobic dance, can also lead to fasciitis.
It is essential to address fasciitis and begin treatment immediately to alleviate symptoms and eliminate the inflammation's cause
before it worsens into chronic pain in the heel, further hindering mobility.
Insoles.
Special orthopedic insoles are recommended for plantar fasciitis to cushion the footstep and reduce tension in the plantar fascia after the acute phase. This helps prevent tissue relapse and the return of chronic pain.
