Knee Pain

The knee joint is the largest in the human body and is subjected to great strain every day. Over time, this can cause degenerative changes. Furthermore, knees are highly vulnerable to injuries, which is why it is not surprising that people complain of knee pain.

It is an essential hinge joint that allows flexion and extension of the legs, as well as internal and external rotation when bent.

Degenerative changes

Knees are subjected to great efforts every day, which can cause degenerative changes associated with cartilage wear. The cushioning function of the cartilage suffers, and stiffness and pain in the knee may be felt. This explains why more and more people suffer from knee osteoarthritis (joint degeneration) as they age. Knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis) is a progressive process. In the early stages, knee pain occurs occasionally (e.g., when carrying weight or after prolonged periods of rest), while in an advanced state, cartilage damage is so extensive that the bones almost rub against each other. The pain occurs more frequently and is more intense.

Symptoms of knee pain

- Acute knee pain starts suddenly, for example, after an injury. Chronic knee pain manifests gradually, initially as mild pain that intensifies over time, as in knee osteoarthritis.

- Knee pain quality: How does the pain feel?

- Pressure-like pain, sharp, cramp-like, or dull continuous pain. External signs: swelling, redness, heat to the touch, restricted movement.

Treatment for knee pain

Knee pain treatment depends on the cause. Conservative therapeutic options are frequently applied:

- Anti-inflammatory pain relievers and ointments. Heat or cold treatment. Orthopedic products (insoles, bandages, braces, orthopedic shoes). Physiotherapy. Muscle training (strengthening and stretching). Electrotherapy and ultrasound treatment.

- However, there are situations where surgery can no longer be avoided. But nowadays, many surgeries can be performed almost atraumatically through arthroscopy.
