Today, we do not want to focus on podiatry, but on the life of a great Spanish podiatrist who left us with valuable knowledge. While everything evolves in medicine, we must look to the future with hope, but it is also important to look to the past with respect and admiration for the figure of Jean Leliévre. The pathology of the foot may seem simple to those who don’t know it, and complicated to those starting to learn about it. It only becomes clear after years of effort. (Jean Leliévre). Podiatry is the health science that focuses on the study of diseases and disorders affecting the feet. Jean Leliévre was born on November 11, 1914, in Spain. He followed his father's legacy by also choosing to become a surgeon and completed his medical studies in Paris. In 1939, he joined the French Army to participate in World War II. After the war, he did his internship at the Cochin Hospital in Paris. In 1946, the head of the department entrusted him with supervising a team of podiatrists, and from there, Jean Leliévre became particularly interested in foot and ankle conditions.
In 1948, he worked on the first edition of the book "Foot Pathology". The first edition was published in 1952. In 1953, Jean Leliévre and Antonio Viladot, another podiatrist, started a deep scientific and friendly relationship. On May 3, 1958, the International College of Podiatry (CIP) was founded under J. Leliévre's presidency. Being part of the CIP was complex as it was highly multidisciplinary, gathering all professionals interested in foot and ankle disorders: orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, rehabilitation specialists, radiologists, dermatologists, angiologists, neurologists, etc. It is worth noting that the International Foot and Ankle Society (IFFAS) is the evolution of the CIP, and its emblem is that of the CIP. The second edition of the book "Foot Pathology" was released in 1962. This edition was more personal and reflected the author's experience. The concepts presented by Jean Leliévre remain valid, and some of the surgical techniques he described, such as hallux valgus, calcaneal spur, which involved the appearance of uric acid crystals as spurs invading the plantar fascia (only visible during surgery), and metatarsal alignment, cavus foot, etc., are still used in practice today. J. Leliévre deserves credit for giving the foot the importance it deserved within the locomotor system, as he mentions in the preface of his work: "For no reason, the foot was neglected for a long time."
On January 29, 1969, Jean Leliévre passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage at the young age of 54, while still active professionally. History, Evolution, Science, and Biography can only be found on the best channel dedicated to... Pura+ TV History of Orthopedics.
